Police look to ID fatality
By Kassia Micek
Updated: 11.12.08
Conroe police are trying to identify a man who was found severely wounded Monday night along Interstate 45 and later died from what police believe was a hit-and-run incident.
The man, described as a white male with possible Hispanic origins, approximately 5 feet, 7 inches tall and weighing approximately 160 pounds, was found by a citizen on the right side of the northbound I-45 feeder road between North Loop 336 and FM 3083 before 10:45 p.m. Monday, Conroe Police Sgt. Bob Berry said. He received multiple external and internal major injuries.
The man was transported by ambulance to Memorial Hermann – The Texas Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead, Berry said.
“As this point in time we’re still in the field and checking with hotels, restaurants and apartments,” Berry said about trying to identify the victim. “We believe there’s just more to this story because we don’t believe he was homeless.”
The man, who did not have any identification, was well-groomed and had a “few days old” hair cut with a thin and short goatee without a mustache, Berry said.
“We do feel positive he was hit by a vehicle based on autopsy results,” Berry said. “We do believe it was a truck or (sports utility vehicle) with a higher bumper because of his injuries.”
Evidence at the scene indicates the man was walking northbound on the edge of the feeder when he was struck by an unknown vehicle, according to a Conroe Police Department press release
The only identifying marks on the man are four tattoos: “FUNKY” on the lower right forearm, “TOWN” on the lower left forearm, a small cross on the lower right leg and the letter “F” on the lower left leg, according to the press release.
“He was alive at the scene when responders first arrived,” Berry said. “He made a couple statements. He didn’t make sentences, but he did say words. … He couldn’t talk very distinctly.”
While receiving medical treatment at the scene, the man muttered “Jesse” and possible birth dates of “09-05-86” or “12-05-86,” Berry said.
Despite the man’s attempts to communicate, the information has not linked the name or dates to a specific person, Berry said. A fingerprint check through nationwide databases returned no results. No missing persons reports filed with CPD match the man’s description.
“We don’t know if it was a misunderstanding on our part or if he just couldn’t talk,” Berry said. “We’ve been moving everything by the tattoos and the dates.
“We’re working every angle we can to try to get this guy identified.”
Anyone with information regarding the identity of the victim of a fatal auto-pedestrian accident Monday night or who has information regarding the circumstances of the fatality is asked to contact the Conroe Police Department Criminal Investigations Division at (936) 522-3231.
Persons with information leading to the arrest of the person can call Montgomery County Crime Stoppers at (800) 392-7867. Callers may remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward.

The clerk, Ali Muhammad Mamji, said the man entered the store pretending to be a customer, but wore a hooded jacket and kept his head tilted downward to shield his face. On the video, the clerk placed the cigarettes on the counter, the man held his hand under his jacket as though he had a gun and demanded the money from the cash register. Although he had the money momentarily, when he turned to flee, Mamji pressed a button behind the counter to lock the door, trapping the man inside. The assailant appeared to panic. He dropped the hood covering his face, laid the money on the counter and tried unsuccessfully to break open the door. Meanwhile, Mamji placed the cash under the counter.
When the robber found no other exit, he busted the glass in the door, and then tried to retrieve the cash, but it was gone. Hoping someone can put a name with a face, investigators have released the composite drawing of a man who grabbed an 11-year-old girl Nov. 5 as she walked on a bike path in the Panther Creek area of The Woodlands.
The girl told responding deputies from the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office that she escaped her attacker with the help of her Jack Russell terrier, who responded to her scream by biting the man's leg, causing him to release his grip on the child's ankle.
Lt. Dan Norris said the girl's detailed description of the man was used to create the drawing.
She described the man as tan, probably Hispanic, male between 30 and 40 years old, with short hair, bushy eyebrows and a Band-Aid on the left side of his face from his nose to his eye at the time, according to Norris.
"He was described as wearing blue jeans, a striped shirt and white Nike shoes with green shoelaces," Norris said.
A description was broadcast over police radios and the area was searched, but no suspect was located.
Less than a week later, on Nov. 15, a 14-year-old girl claimed a man followed her on a bike path in the same general area, but her description of the suspect was different. Conroe Independent School District police said the information they received from the MCSO described the second suspect as a 30- to 35-year-old white male with a medium complexion and long sideburns.
Since then, there have been no similar incidents reported, according to Lt. Joe Sclider.
"We're still actively pursuing an investigation," Sclider said. "We've had no legitimate leads."
Sclider said investigators hope someone will recognize the man in the composite drawing and contact law enforcement or Montgomery County Crime Stoppers, who will pay up to a $1,000 cash reward for information leading to an arrest or indictment of a felony crime. Tips can be made to Crime Stoppers by calling 800-392-STOP (7867). Anonymous tips can also be made through the Montgomery County Crime Stoppers website at www.montgomerycountycrimestoppers.org
